Weligama is a town on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in Matara District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka. The name Weligama, literally means “sandy village” which refers to the area’s sandy sweep bay. It is approximately 144 kilometres (89 mi) south of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 9 metres (30 ft) above the sea level.
Weligama is well known as an upcoming surfing destination. Although the waves aren’t as rough as the eastern coast, Weligama has become a great destination for Surfers. The surfing industry and community in Weligama has grown rapidly during the last 5 years, and is expected to attract more travellers in the upcoming years. The main reason behind it’s success is that Weligam is located between Galle and Mirissa. Travellers (both local and foreign) often tend to relax at the Galle fort, surf the waves in Weligama and party the night out at Mirissa.
